Crystal Fighters: "Traemos a Huelva la experiencia completa Crystal"

Han pisado los escenarios de medio mundo con un sonido alegre y desenfadado, han probado todo tipo de ritmos e instrumentos y ahora tras los múltiples giros por el planeta adorando a la 'pachamama' llegan a Huelva por primera vez, siendo uno de los grupos con más proyección internacional que han visitado jamás Huelva. Diariodehuelva.es no quería dejar escapar la oportunidad de dedicarles una entrevista a esta banda inglesa que promete un enorme espectáculo sobre el escenario de Mapa de Músicas de las Fiestas Colombinas.

1-¿Cómo afrontáis vuestro concierto en Huelva? How do you face your concert in Huelva?

Con mucha emoción y muy preparados. Nos encanta tocar en el sur de España y estamos seguros de que será una noche fantástica.

With great excitement and much preparation.  We love to play here in the south of Spain and this we are sure will be a fantastic night. 

2- Sois todo un espectáculo sobre el escenario. ¿Alguna sorpresa para este concierto? You are a whole show on stage. Any surprises for this one?

Será la experiencia completa de Crystal que estamos encantados de traer a Huelva por primera vez, además tenemos a nuestros buenos amigos Felipe e Imanol Ugarte que vienen del País Vasco para dejarlos atónitos con el increíble sonido de la txalaparta.

It will be the full journey Crystal experience we are excited to bring to Huelva for the first time, plus we have our good friends Felipe and Imanol Ugarte coming from the Basque country to stun you with some incredible txalaparta playing.

3-¿Qué aportan instrumentos como el ukelele o la txalaparta a vuestro sonido? What do instruments such as ukulele or txalaparta bring to your sound?

La txalaparta es un instrumento muy especial para nosotros, ya que nos conecta con la música tradicional vasca de la que tenemos una profunda influencia. Tiene un sonido natural y produce ritmos únicos que son esenciales para nuestro sonido. El ukelele lo hemos usado en muchas canciones ya que siempre viajamos a todas partes con uno, así que allá donde estemos podemos escribir un pequeño 'riff' y a menudo terminan en canciones.

The txalaparta is a very special instrument for us as it connects us to the Basque traditional music that influences us so profoundly.  It has a natural sound and produces unique rhythms that are essential to our sound.  The ukulele we have used in many songs as we always travel everywhere with one, so wherever we are we can write a little riff and often they end up in songs.

4-Lleváis 10 años sin bajaros de los escenarios españoles ¿Sentis ya al público español como algo vuestro?  You have been 10 years without getting off the Spanish stages. Do you already feel the Spanish crowd as yours ?

-Nos encanta el público español. Tocar en España es una experiencia como en ningún otro lugar del mundo, hay un amor por la música, el baile, el canto y el buen rollo de la gente que se adapta a nuestro sonido y actuaciones.

-We love the Spanish crowds so much.  Playing in Spain is like nowhere else in the world, there is a love of music, dancing, singing and good times that the people have that just suits our sound and performances. 

5- ¿Os consideráis un ejemplo de multiculturalidad? Do you consider yourself an example of multiculturalism?

Estamos seguros de ser una banda multicultural en cuanto a los miembros de la misma y en cuanto a nuestro sonido, tratamos de incluir muchas influencias de muchas tradiciones y culturas diferentes. No tenemos miedo de experimentar con estilos de música para crear algo que suene único.

We are for sure a multicultural band in terms of members and in terms of our sound we try to include many influences from many different traditions and cultures.  We are not afraid to experiment with styles of music to create something unique sounding.

6- ¿Cómo describiríais vuestro último trabajo, 'Gaia and Friends' How would you describe your latest work ‘Gaia and Friends’?

-'Gaia & Friends' fue un disco muy divertido de grabar, teníamos tantas ideas y canciones que podríamos haber incluido... pero decidimos las que sentimos más genuinas y fieles a nuestras experiencias en los últimos años: viajes lejanos a lugares donde nunca habíamos estado, aprendiendo canciones de culturas antiguas, remezclando grabaciones que habíamos hecho por casualidad cuando escuchamos algo increíble en la calle. Como resultado, el disco es probablemente nuestro sonido más diverso hasta la fecha.

"Gaia & Friends" was a very fun record to make, we had so many ideas and songs we could have included but we decided on the ones that felt most genuine and true to our experiences over the last few years - distant travel to places we have never been, learning songs from ancient cultures, remixing recordings we had made by chance when we heard something incredible in the street.  As a result the record is probably our most diverse sounding yet.  

7- Tenéis en el mixtape colaboraciones internacionales importantes ¿Os costo mucho convencerles? You have important international collaborations in the mixtape. Do you have a hard time convincing them?

Todas las colaboraciones afortunadamente fluyeron de forma muy natural y nada se vio forzado. Estamos muy contentos de haber trabajado con Bomba Estéreo de Colombia, Soledad Vélez de Chile, Miller Blue de Gobowen, Allison Sleator de Irlanda, Petite Noir de Sudáfrica, Ugarte Anaiak de Euskadi y muchos más de todo el mundo. Fue un placer armar este disco porque había muchas personas interesantes y creativas involucradas.

All the collaborations thankfully flowed very organically and nothing felt forced.  We are super happy to have worked with Bomba Estéreo from Colombia, Soledad Vélez from Chile, Miller Blue from Gobowen, Allison Sleator from Ireland, Petite Noir from South Africa, Ugarte Anaiak from Euskadi, and many more from all over the world.  It was a joy to put together this record because there were so many interesting and creative people involved. 

8- Vuestra música es muy festiva y positiva ¿Sois tan optimistas en el día a día? Your music is very festive and positive. Are you so optimistic in everyday life?

Creo que vivimos en un momento muy especial de la historia y, aunque hay tantas cosas negativas en este mundo, creo que estamos en un punto de inflexión en el que los jóvenes están demandando cambios en cuanto al uso de la tecnología y a la transparencia. Esto conlleva  forzar a los poderes a ser abiertos y claros sobre cuestiones importantes como los derechos humanos, los derechos de los animales y el medio ambiente, lo que está demostrando ser fundamental para cambiar las actitudes a todos los niveles.

I believe we are living at a very special time in history and even though there are so many negative things going on in this world I believe we are at a turning point where at a turning point where the youth are demanding change and the technology and transparency that it brings is forcing the powers that be to be open and clear about major issues such as human rights, animal rights and the environment, which is proving to be instrumental in changing attitudes at all levels. 

9-¿Qué escuchan los componentes de Crystal Fighters en la intimidad? What music do Crystal Fighters members hear in their homes?

Hemos estado escuchando a Nicola Cruz y El Búho, además de disfrutar de la nueva ola del rap español: C. Tangana, Don Patricio, Recycled J y, por supuesto, high-life, tropicalia y toda la música disco poco común que podamos encontrar.

We have been listening to a lot of Nicola Cruz and El Búho, as well as enjoying some of the new wave of Spanish rap - C. Tangana, Don Patricio, Recycled J, and of course lots of high-life, tropicalia and all the rare disco we can find. 

10- ¿Que pensáis que os depara el futuro? What do you think the future holds for you?

Esperemos continuar viviendo en humilde gratitud por este hermoso regalo de la vida que tenemos la suerte de experimentar y hacer todo lo posible para estar al servicio del planeta y de los necesitados.

Hopefully continuing to live in humble gratitude for this beautiful gift of life we are lucky enough to experience and doing all we can to be in service of the planet and those in need.
